Terrafugia Transition flying car shows up at air show, doesn’t fly

As promised, Terrafugia’s Transition flying car recently made its public debut at the AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and while it didn’t actually fly, it at least looks a whole lot more real than those renders the company had been showing off. Terrafugia has also gotten a bit more specific about the vehicle’s specs, with it promising that the Transition’s weight will stay under 850 pounds thanks to its carbon fiber body, and that it’ll get about 23 mpg from its 100 hp Rotax 912 S engine. Unlike something like the fabled Moller Skycar, however, this one won’t do vertical take offs and landings, so you’ll either need a really long driveway or access to a runway of some sort. There’s also no word on what it’ll cost, but Terrafugia says it already has fifty customers awaiting delivery of the vehicle, which the company is promising will happen in 2010. SpaceX’s rocket destroys Scotty’s space-bound ashes in a demonstration of tremendous irony

Finely riding that razored edge between tragedy and comedy, the New York Times reports that not only did the SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket lose its three satellites and fail to reach orbit during a recent launch, but it also destroyed the remains of actor James Doohan, best known as the original Star Trek’s Chief Engineer “Scotty.” The actor’s ashes — as well as those of over 200 others — were being carried into orbit by the rocket when complications with the ship’s stage separation led to the (assumed) destruction of the craft. This recent mishap puts a sad period on the end of the sentence that already included an earlier loss and eventual recovery of the remains.

Nissan ECO pedal promises to push back against aggressive drivers

While Nissan hasn’t quite cut drivers out of the equation all together (yet), it is making some considerable progress in controlling just how they drive, including preventing folks from driving drunk and, now with its new ECO pedal, preventing people from driving inefficiently. To do that, the pedal simply pushes back against the driver’s foot when it detects wasteful acceleration, which Nissan says could improve fuel efficiency by as much as five to ten percent. Of course, the system can be switched off, and it likely won’t be making an appearance in all Nissan vehicles right off the bat, although the company says it’ll be showing up in at least some of them as early as next year.

AMP test drives all-electric Saturn Sky on video

Remember that Ohio-based firm that planned on converting 300 or so Saturn Skys into all-electric roadsters? Advanced Mechanical Products ring a bell? At any rate, said outfit has just hosted up a video of its fourth test drive of a prototype, which is shown sporting an “Electric” badge on the front fender and a whole mess of batteries and wires underneath the hood. Oh, and then there’s that unmistakable whizzing sound as it cruises on by. Check out the video after the jump.

SpaceX’s Falcon 1 rocket fails to reach orbit… again

Aw man, and we had such high hopes that the third time really would be a charm. SpaceX’s third attempt to launch a payload rocket into outer space failed this weekend, with launch control confirming an “anomaly” just five minutes after liftoff. Elon Musk, SpaceX chairman and CEO, did admit that it was “obviously a big disappointment not to reach orbit on this Flight 3 of the Falcon 1,” but he has assured the world that his firm won’t be wasting any time feeling sorry for itself. The Falcon 1 was carrying a minuscule satellite dubbed Trailblazer for the Pentagon’s Operationally Responsive Space Office, though we’ve no idea how costly the loss was. Thankfully, we can all look forward to SpaceX trying again sometime in the future, but unless the tables turn in a hurry, we’d say the odds are still stacked against it.

SpaceX conducts successful static launch of Falcon 9 rocket

Remember Space Exploration Technologies Corp, otherwise known as SpaceX? You know, the private space transport company started by PayPal founder Elon Musk that won the NASA Commercial Commercial Orbital Transportation Services competition for its Falcon rocket? Last we heard from SpaceX it had lost Falcon 1 during a test launch, but this week its Falcon 9 launch vehicle was successfully fired up. While it didn’t go anywhere, the successful static launch was good news for the company, and the test run was even two months ahead of schedule, which could mean good things for the rockets’ ultimate place in runs to the International Space Station once the Space Shuttle goes out of service in 2010.

Bricycle electric tricycle actually cooler than it sounds

Compared to the almost universally-embarrassing homebuilt electric vehicles we’ve seen pop up so far, the Bricycle electric recumbent bike is up there with the Tesla Roadster in terms of sex appeal — even though it kind of looks like a futuristic delivery truck. Designed to transport one person as efficiently as possible, the Bricyle (developed by someone named Brian — clever) isn’t completed yet, but it’s got a 48-volt electric-assist motor for when you get tired of pedaling through the 21 bicycle gears, and disc brakes for quick stops. Sure, but can you get it in a color besides electric cucumber?

Yamaha’s PAS Brace electric bike gets smart… maybe too smart

Look, we’ll be the first to hand over an adequate amount of kudos each time artificial intelligence is improved, but we won’t lie — we’re kind of scared about giving our vehicles too many smarts. Yamaha Motors has just unveiled a comparatively affordable electric bike which looks to continuously monitor your driving behavior and react accordingly. The PAS Brace features the highly touted S.P.E.C.8 mechanism, which keeps a close eye on your speed, acceleration and gear position in order to conserve battery life when possible and provide just the right amount of oomph to get you over that one… last… hill. This one is set to land in Japan on the same day the Olympics begin for ¥125,800 ($1,171), and if you’re not feelin’ the black, red and white flavors will be available for your pedaling pleasure.

Toyota’s Winglet aims to usurp Segway, why we don’t know (updated with video)

Prepare to step aside Segway, you had your chance to revolutionize personal transportation. Introducing the Toyota Winglet. Still under development, Winglet’s body has a 10.4 x 18-inch footprint and stands 1.5-, 2.2-, or 3.7-feet tall (depending upon the S, M, or L model chosen) and features an electric motor capable of a max 6km/h cruising speed for up to 10km a jaunt (only 5km for the S model). Like the Segway, the user controls the Winglet by shifting his weight to move the transporter forward and back or to make tight turns. Winglet will begin consumer testing at the Central Japan International Airport near Nagoya and Laguna Gamagori resort this Autumn with further testing in more crowded environments planned for 2009. It’s planned to hit a production stride in 2010. Hey Toyota, here’s a hint: you’d better start lobbying for sidewalk legalization ASAP if you’re hoping for global success. Tesla’s in-car charging computer gets touched on video

Your retinas have been treated to plenty of external shots of Tesla’s Roadster, but have you ever stopped to wonder what kind of excitement sat just southwest of the steering wheel? CNET’s UK branch managed to get their camcorder within a Roadster parked on display over in Britain, and what they found was a rather robust interface that enables owners to get all sorts of involved with how and when the car charges. The representative did note that typical navigation functions were controlled via the JVC head unit, but the small panel just under the gauges enables motorists to control a number of aspects in relation to charging. There’s even a guide that explains which choices are cheaper and more beneficial for the long-term life of the battery. Have a look at the video in the read link.
